Camp Shelby is a 136,000 acre military post located 12 miles south of Hattiesburg, MS on Hwy 49 South. The camp is the nation’s largest state-owned training site. It is positioned in parts of Forrest, Perry and Greene County. It was established in 1917 during World War I. It functions as a training site for both active and reserve units. Camp Shelby is not only a facility for the Army, but also for active Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force members. It is the annual training location for National Guard and Reserve units located in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee.

 

The camp has a rich history and has served many purposes since it was opened. One of the original buildings still stands today, known as Building 6981. It is an ammunition storage magazine. Building 6981 is located across from the MATES facility on Warehouse Road. Camp Shelby is also home to the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum. The history of Camp Shelby is significant part of the museum's collection.

 

Camp Shelby is an integral part of Hattiesburg – employing more than 1,000 people as well as hosting as many as 100,000 personnel annually Camp Shelby is also home to the Youth Challenge Academy. This program is a military structured GED and State High School diploma program. The Youth Challenge Academy was established in 1994 to aid Mississippi high school dropouts, ages 16 to 18, designed and operated by the National Guard Bureau.These employees, students and other personnel make use of Camp Shelby, which helps provide a total economic boost to the Hattiesburg area.
