Getting Around in Hattiesburg
Just as the spokes on a hubcap all intersect in the middle, so do major railways and roadway intersect with Hattiesburg. This is where it gets its nickname “Hub City”. Highway 49 and Interstate 59 run North and South through Hattiesburg. Highway 98 runs East and West through Hattiesburg. These “spokes” give you easy access to major cities. Jackson, Gulfport/Biloxi, Mobile and New Orleans are all less than 100 miles away.
Many USM students living on or near campus ride their bikes or walk to school or around town. Most other residents drive. There is also public transit and rentals available to make your commute easy.

Long Leaf Trace: Take a walk or ride your bike along the Longleaf Trace. It is a beautiful 39-mile railway that was converted to a paved recreational nature trail as part of the Rails to Trails Conservancy project.
